Step-by-step guide & email template freebie!

If you’re reading this, you’ve likely just taken the exciting leap into starting your photography business! One of the most common questions I get from new photographers during discovery calls and mentorship sessions is, “How do I find clients?”

Believe me, I get it—I’ve been right where you are. You’ve set up your business, invested in camera gear, and carry your camera with you everywhere, ready to capture the world. But now you’re looking to work with paying clients. So, how do you actually find them?

The answer is simpler than you might think, and it starts with tapping into the support network you already have.

Step 1: Make a List of Your Supporters

Start by setting a timer for 10 minutes and make a list of everyone in your network who’s already a supporter. These might be family members, friends, coworkers, yoga instructors, former managers, or even the friendly barista at your favorite coffee shop. Anyone you’ve connected with and who has cheered you on or been part of your journey could be a valuable contact.

Tip: Don’t limit this list to just people you speak with frequently—include anyone who knows your character, your passion, and would genuinely be excited to see you succeed.

Step 2: Draft a Personal Email

Once you’ve got your list, it’s time to write an email to let these people know about your new photography business. Share a little about your vision, what excites you most about your work, and why human connection is central to your photography approach. Then, gently ask if they’d be willing to help spread the word about your business. A personal touch is key here, as each person on your list is part of your story and cheering you on, so it’s important to nurture these relationships.

I’ve included a link to access this step-by-step guide & customizable email template freebie at the end of this post, but make it yours! The more you add your voice and passion, the more genuine it will feel.

Step 3: Hit Send and Build Momentum

Now, with your list ready and your email drafted, start sending out those messages! You’ll be surprised at the ripple effect that sharing your new venture can create. Word of mouth is one of the most powerful ways to grow a business, especially in creative fields like photography, and it’s often an overlooked resource. By sharing your excitement and starting a conversation with your network, you’re already putting yourself on the map for potential clients who resonate with your style and approach.

Why This Works

When you reach out to your community, you’re not just looking for clients—you’re signaling to your future clients that you’re ready to document their moments. People who know you and appreciate your work can become your best advocates, sharing your name and excitement with those who might just be looking for a photographer like you.

Take that first step and let your support network help bring your dream to life!
